questions

questions I am a young college student who is doing a study on religion. I hold no bias I simply would like feedback as to why people believe what they believe.

I was raised in a Christian home then went extreme atheist for a year because that's what was cool and now I really don't know one way or the other. This study is for my sociology class, but I picked this topic because it is personal and relevant.

Personally my biggest question is afterlife is that the motivating factor to religion? If so why?

I mean to be dead in the ground and nothing more makes me feel rushed like there is no time, but eternal life? Heaven or Hell, Purgatory, or even my own planet forever that sounds exhusting. Either way I am trapped even after I die.
