I'm new and just wanted to introduce myself. I live in the Kenosha, WI area too, one of those little midwest farm towns, Wilmot, and can really understand another member's comments about the religious craziness here. I got both of my taillights smashed at the Woodman's in Kenosha and I can't say for sure if my Happy Humanist sticker had something to do with it or not.

The only family I have, my mother and sister, are hostile to me because I am an atheist. I let my 5 children (all grown now) choose their own beliefs and 4 of them are nonreligious. I am an ex-christian, ~15 years now, and never been happier since I got out of that.

I would just like to participate in discussions and talk to others who share my views.

I don't understand some of the words and expressions used here, like what is a "moderate" or "liberal" atheist, etc.?, but I'm sure I will learn as time goes by.

One of my favorite quotes is -

"The very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: they don't alter their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views, which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering."

Don't recall the original quotee on that one. :)

I'm Mandie, I've been an Atheist for a little while now, but since jr. high I've been agnostic. I'm 23 years old and I live out in the country. I have a good group of people, two of my brothers and dad are either atheist or agnostic. I have a group of friends who are also. Um...well if you have any questions, totally feel free to ask!

`I believe the likelihood of becoming religious is genetic. I come from a family of nonbelievers. The so-called biblical stories are just as fictitious to me as any fairy tale. For example, how does one man Santa Clause deliver toys to ever boy and in the world in one night? He cannot! The aforementioned logic is sufficient to explain so-called miracles that seem to define the so-called legitimacy of religion. The test is, if it does not make since in the here and now it never did!

I am fortunate enough to live in an urban area where only a third of the population is churched. See this city data link: (removed) Therefore, most people could care less what you believe. I do not need to broadcast my beliefs. My beliefs are a private matter and I think most people here respect that. In addition, we have several religion type originations that either serve or welcome non-believers like the Unitarian-Universalist church, Humanist society, Society of Friends, etc…
